New ‘Work-From-Anywhere Index’ Reveals Top 10 Cities for Digital Nomads

The digital nomadic lifestyle has been a growing trend in the last decade, with advances in technology and digital connectivity, enabling more and more people to work anywhere.

Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, millions of remote workers were added to the global workforce in 2020 and 2021, rapidly accelerating this trend.

While a number of forward-thinking cities and countries have recently introduced digital nomadic visas to appeal to this high-income audience, most destinations have not yet made the leap. However, many places that do not have these visas still have a lot to offer remote workers.

To help digital nomads separate the wheat from the chaff when choosing a home base, Nestpick created “The Work-from-Anywhere index, ”A list that ranks the top 75 cities in the world for telecommuters.

The on-demand housing website ranked cities based on their cost of living, infrastructure, legislation, freedoms and living conditions. Here are your top 10 selections:

1. Melbourne, Australia
Melbourne won first place for having a nomadic digital visa, low cost of living, great digital nomadic infrastructure, fast internet, excellent diversity scores and world-class healthcare. However, beware of their low COVID-19 vaccination rate.

2. Dubai, UAE
Dubai’s digital nomad visa, zero income tax regime, low cost of living, fast Wi-Fi, solid safety record and strong COVID-19 vaccination rate were good enough for second place. However, it has the worst scores for gender and LGBTQ+ equality of all 75 cities on the list.

3. Sydney, Australia
Like Melbourne, Sydney offers a nomadic digital visa, next level digital nomadic infrastructure, fast internet, excellent diversity scores and excellent health, but its higher cost of living has pushed it into third place.

4. Tallinn, Estonia
Estonia was one of the first European countries to launch a digital nomad visa in response to the pandemic. That show, combined with a low cost of living, excellent internet speeds and high diversity scores, gave Tallinn fourth place on the list.

5. London, UK
London is not cheap and does not offer a digital nomad visa. However, it has one of the highest nomadic digital infrastructure scores in the top 10, very high diversity scores, world-class health, and a high COVID-19 vaccination rate that was good enough for fifth place.

6. Tokyo, Japan
Tokyo enjoys a solid nomadic digital infrastructure, internet, diversity and health score, but its high cost of living and poor COVID-19 vaccination rate pushed it to sixth place.

7. Singapore
Singapore’s home office costs are the highest in the top 10, but it has a relatively low income tax rate, excellent nomadic digital infrastructure, good diversity scores and excellent health.

8. Glasgow, UK
Glasgow shares most of London’s highest scores on nomadic digital infrastructure, diversity, health and COVID-19 vaccinations, but has a higher income tax rate.

9. Montreal, Canada
The only North American city in the top 10, Montreal offers affordable home office costs, great nomadic digital infrastructure, top-notch diversity scores and excellent health.

10. Berlin, Germany
Germany has a freelance visa program, fast internet, enviable nomadic digital infrastructure, diversity scores and solid health, but its high income tax rate has pushed it into 10th place.
