The all mountain backpack Bike Alpine Pro 28+ from Vaude is ideal for extended mountain bike adventures. We are happy to help you with the choice of a good cycling backpack with this review. What we can already reveal is that this mountain bike backpack provides a lot of comfort and fun.
Mountain biking is more than just having good lung capacity and sufficient leg strength. That means that a good balance is important. For example if you have to overcome an obstacle on a steep slope or when you descend on a root path. Off-road cycling with a mountain bike on unpaved roads and paths is and remains a great challenge. The trails are getting more and more technical. This also increases the need for good protection. Without wanting to compromise on comfort. Vaude delivers top performance thanks to the functional mountain bike backpack Bike Alpine Pro 28+ to produce.
Why a good mountain bike backpack?
In many cases mountain bike tours can last several hours. Some diehards go even further, as they make trips where they ride the tops of the mountains for days on end. With this in mind, it is important to be prepared for rides of any length. Preparation may consist of taking tools for mechanical problems. But also (sports) nutrition, water and extra clothing. Perhaps most importantly, a rider has a good quality backpack. A backpack specially designed for mountain biking. Vaude has designed an all-round backpack with the Bike Alpine Pro 28+. In doing so, they do not compromise on quality. We tested this backpack on content, comfort and functionalities.
A great backpack for mountain bikers
In the Netherlands we do not have mountains hundreds of meters high. But the beautiful hilly landscape of South Limburg. The area around Valkenburg is a great place for mountain biking. Located in the rolling foothills of the Ardennes, there are many short, but steep climbs, where you can enjoy beautiful views. We were able to test the Bike Alpine Pro 28+ backpack well in the Limburg hilly landscape. What is striking is that the 28-liter backpack offers plenty of storage space divided over different compartments.
The backpack is large enough to store spare clothing and tools for multi-day trips with overnight stays. The backpack has a clear main compartment and a separate hydration system compartment. You can even place a water bag of 3 liters in it. At the bottom there is a pocket for access from the bottom.
To make the best of it
Before going to sleep, put your outfit and your energy bars in your bag, knowing that another beautiful cycling day is waiting. Feeling the sun in your back and then realizing that the windstopper is stored in your backpack for the rest of the day. If you unexpectedly need your windstopper or raincoat, you can easily grab it through the open compartment at the front of the bag. You can easily store trifles via the mesh pockets on the side and thus in the side pockets of the bag and so there too.
When things go wrong
It can just happen, a flat tire or a dent in your rim. You then need tools to get yourself back on track. If something breaks, you still have to make some adjustments to get home safely. A spacious backpack needs the right kind of compartments, so you don’t have to look frustrated for the spare tire or your phone during your trips. Or just want to quickly grab your raincoat. You can store the multi-tools and replacement materials in the two-part front pocket. The big advantage of the front pocket is that you can access it immediately and have access to your materials.
Ultimate wearing comfort
Despite the larger size, the backpack stays perfectly on your back due to the many adjustment options. The adjustable chest strap and hip strap ensure that the backpack stays in place. In addition, the backpack has the side compression function with which the volume – by stretch insert – can be limited or expanded. If the backpack is not full, just tighten the side compression straps, you will not be bothered by the excess space (at that time).
For the downhill run, the system can be transformed into lying close to the body. This brings the load center of gravity closer to the body and thus supports bike handling on uneven, winding trails.
Back aeration and ventilation
The innovative, ventilated Aeroflex Control back system offers unique comfort. For good ventilation during sweaty mountain climbs, simply tighten the back system. The back system creates a space between the backpack and the back that is open on three sides, so that air can circulate freely. It ensures that your back stays cool. The lightweight spring-wire frame allows for this ventilation space, even when the backpack is fully loaded.
All in all, it can be said that the wearing comfort is excellent and that is the most important during intensive mountain bike tours. The backpack is stable on the back and remains suitable for what you want to take with you. The weight is largely absorbed by the belly belt / hip belt so that it does not hang from your shoulders. You really feel that!
The green thread
Vaude attaches great importance to sustainability. “The green thread” runs through the entire company at VAUDE. Green Shape is the VAUDE quality mark for products that are made in a particularly environmentally friendly way. Products must be made from at least 90 percent organic cotton, recycled material or Tencel wood fiber. And painted with the environmentally friendly VAUDE eColour paint process. Part of the material for this mountain bike backpack is made from recycled PET bottles. They are collected, cleaned and melted down. The remaining quality yarn is then processed into, in this case, the mountain bike backpack.
VAUDE products with Eco Finish are made to be environmentally friendly and water-repellent without fluorocarbons (PFC). PFCs belong to a group of chemical compounds that are used in many outdoor products to impregnate the outer fabric. VAUDE is clearly committed to avoiding PFCs completely. The Bike Alpin Pro + has a natural water-repellent function. This means that water and even dirt cannot simply penetrate the fabric. In case of persistent or heavy rainfall, the water-repellent property cannot be guaranteed. With the included rain cover (with reflective print and a rear light holder so that you stand out), Vaude has taken this into account and you prevent a wet suit.
The durable Bike Alpin Pro 28+ is a light, very inventive and spacious mountain bike backpack. A perfect backpack for intensive and long rides. The ideal fit continuously provides the necessary comfort. Certainly not an unnecessary luxury if you make long bike rides in a hilly landscape or the mountains where you have to bridge many vertical meters. By adjusting the fit on the back, the backpack literally lies on your back and therefore it does not feel like ballast. An adjustable sternum strap, a detachable helmet holder, side compression straps, an outlet for a drinking hose, key and bicycle light holder are just as obvious as the included rain cover (with reflective print) and a rear light holder. The Plus in the name stands for the variable compartment that can be opened upwards, in which a rain or wind jacket can be stored on long tours.
Earlier we also tested a cycling jacket and cycling shoes from Vaude, which we are still very satisfied with. Read the review about the jacket and cycling shoes here.
